What’s the point of delineating information that almost everybody could also find out in other places? That’s what I have realized when searching the internet for exclusive information about the ketogenic diet. Therefore, I have decided to give more personal, yet realistic values: my experiences.

Am I in a Ketosis?
Long story short, yes! It’s been only four days trying this diet, and I’m a bit surprised, too. There are many suggested methods to determine whether someone is in a ketosis. And one of them is a fruity odor of your morning breath. This is because the acetone, one of ketone bodies, is produced inside the body and evaporated through the lungs. This acetone is the cause of a fruity odor.
However, this is not a precise way to measure the ketosis, is it? I also wanted more accurate and easier way. Searching through, I finally have managed to prepare reagent strips for ketone tests.
You can see the difference between two strips at the below right image which left one indicates the first day and right one indicates now. As the color of a reagent section goes dark, more ketone bodies are telling my body is burning fats as a primary fuel.

There is one tip when using these strips, though; the best result would come when you test in the morning. A significant amount of ketone bodies generates during the night time. In other words, our fat-burning process is mainly done while we are asleep. Fascinating, isn’t it? Hence make sure to tuck in bed for enough time!
Challenges With The Ketogenic Diet
Again it was only four days of trial, but I’ve gone through many challenges, too. It has been more than just normal fasting. I hope you guys read this section and have a healthy mindset when you encounter same symptoms as me.
The Desperate Hunger
Who wouldn’t love eating a loaf of bread? For first two days, I felt an enormous appetite for carbs. I’m an enthusiast for a pepperoni pizza, and I almost let myself to have delivered one JUST WITHIN TWO DAYS. Eating tons of butter and fats might seem enjoyable, but eating those without potatoes or pieces of bread was a whole different problem!
There was one motivation for me to endure, though; I wouldn’t be able to write this journal if I had given up. And this was a huge deal to me. Fortunately, the appetite went away like magic when it became the third day. Not only the appetite for carbs disappeared, I rather wouldn’t desire foods than before while I still felt hunger.
To help you overcome, I recommend getting help from alternative foods that tastes like “carbs.”
Adding some sweetener to your desert such as a yogurt is a way to relieve an appetite for sugar. But beware! The natural sweetener is safer than artificial ones, of course. Hence I recommend buying Stevia.

The Keto Flu
I went through the well-known “keto flu,” too. This is where people have a hard time passing through because it is accompanied by a headache and hitting lassitude. Even now, writing this article, I feel dizziness.
The body is tired to change fuel, and the brain also has to replace fuel to ketone bodies, which is why keto flu happens. To be specific, here’s the list of symptoms:
- Sugar Cravings
- Difficulty focusing or Brain Fog
- Trouble Getting To Sleep
- Stomach Irritability
The bold ones are symptoms that I am experiencing right now, or I had experienced for past four days. Well, it seems inevitable to suffer from, but fortunately, there are ways to ease these symptoms:
- Eat More Fats
- Eat More Calories
- Eat A Few More Clean Carbs
- Add More Salt To Your Diet
- Drink Enough Water
- Exercise (If you can)
From my perspective, drinking enough water is the most critical suggestion to comply with. The reason is that of another symptom that I had below.
After starting the ketogenic diet, the most significant changes that I had was drinking tons of more water and often going to the toilet for urine.
As our body turns into a body that accepts ketones, our bodies become more metabolic. Then, the kidneys would not sustain salinity for a long time, but they rather discharge quickly. Therefore, a significant amount of water and saline will be flushed out through the urine. But it also means that you have to keep consuming water and salt. Thus drinking lots of water as well as salt in the ketogenic diet is very critical.
Benefit From The Ketogenic Diet
The greatest benefit that I had in four days was losing 3 pounds. That’s all! Simple, but that’s a beautiful point about the ketogenic diet; you can lose your weight just with eating habits without exercising at all. This is also why so many people are trying to start this diet.
To be honest, I’m still struggling to get through the keto flu, so there are more challenges I feel than benefits. It is said to relax and take few weeks to have the symptoms gone, so I hope to point out more good things in near future.
